Counseling vs. Coaching: What's the difference?

While coaching can be therapeutic, it is not therapy. Here are some key differences between counseling and coaching you should know, to determine which service is right for you...

  1. Focus - Coaching focuses on the present and future, while counseling focuses on the past, present, and future.
  2. Goals - Coaching helps people identify goals, use their strengths, and take action. Counseling helps people resolve and heal from past hurts, solve present problems, prevent future problems, and develop themselves.
  3. Approach - Coaching is action-oriented, while counseling is coping-oriented. Coaches challenge clients, while counselors support them with empathy.
  4. Service - Counseling relies on a diagnosis and treatment plan to guide services.  Coaching works with the client to identify goals to achieve, then provides accountability and support to overcome challenges in a healthy way and achieve goals efficiently.
  5. Cost - Counseling may be reimbursed by insurance. Coaching is self-pay, though may be paid for by FSA/HSA funds. Payment is due at time of service. Note: Gateways offers a sliding fee scale for coaching services, available based on client income.

Counseling or Coaching??? - If you need to process and resolve past pain and how it affects your life, relationships and mental state, then a counselor is the right option. If you want to work on your goals and focus on improving your future, working with a coach could benefit you best.
